What are L&L Management Treatments?

These are specialized manual therapy and massage treatments designed to aid in lymphedema and lipedema management. These treatments incorporate techniques from manual lymphatic drainage and decongestive therapy to reduce swelling, improve the condition of skin, increase mobility, reduce the risk of infection, and optimize overall health.

Benefits:

  • promotes lymphatic flow

  • reduces swelling

  • improves immune function

  • enhances tissue health

  • provides pain relief

  • increase circulation

What is Lymphedema?

Lymphedema is a condition characterized by the accumulation of lymphatic fluid, resulting in swelling and tissue enlargement, usually in the arms or legs. It occurs when the lymphatic system, which is responsible for maintaining fluid balance and removing waste and toxins from the body, becomes impaired or damaged.  As a result, the excess fluid accumulates in the affected area, leading to swelling, heaviness, discomfort, and decreased mobility. Over time, lymphedema can also cause fibrosis (the formation of fibrous tissue) and changes in the skin, making it more susceptible to infections.

What is Lipedema?

This is a chronic and progressive condition that involves an abnormal accumulation of fat primarily in the hips, buttocks, thighs, and lower legs. It predominantly affects women and is often characterized by a disproportionate distribution of fat, where the lower body appears larger compared to the upper body. Lipedema is typically symmetrical and can result in a "column-like" appearance in the affected areas. Unlike typical weight gain, fat accumulation in lipedema is resistant to diet and exercise. In addition to the excess fat, individuals with lipedema may experience other symptoms such as pain, tenderness, easy bruising, and swelling.

How are they Treated?

While there is no cure for these conditions, they can be managed and controlled through various techniques, including manual lymphatic drainage, wearing compression garments, exercise, skin care, and lifestyle modifications.  These approaches aim to reduce swelling, improve lymphatic flow, and prevent complications.
